32nd International Exhibition of Inventions is a success for AcneStar®

The Wales Innovators Network took 13 members and their ideas to the 32nd International Exhibition of Inventions, New Techniques and Products in Geneva in April 2004, where Dermastar Ltd was awarded a Silver Medal for their new portable, hand held device for the treatment of acne - AcneStar®.

The product was developed by Dermastarâs Medical Director, Professor H Judodihardjo, one of the UKâs leading dermatologists.

This innovative device uses light to treat the condition and brings a specialist therapy into the home. The device shines blue light onto the affected area of skin at a wavelength which kills the bacteria that cause acne.

Worldwide, billions of pounds are spent yearly by adults and teenagers to treat acne. It is a common skin condition that affects some 97% of the population at some point in their lifetime.

It is well known in the medical world that the bacteria that cause acne can be killed by light. So far, all the devices available to treat acne with light are large, expensive and are only used in hospitals or medical clinics. AcneStar® is a small, portable device that uses the electric mains, therefore, making it suitable for home use.

AcneStar® is an effective, home treatment that uses no chemicals.

One of the main objectives of the Wales Innovators Network is to promote innovators based in Wales and to assist with the commercialisation of their ideas.
